Formulating and sorting questions based on key concepts Students wrote questions related to pollution and categorized them based on Perspective, Causation, Form, Reflection, Causation, Change, Responsibility and Function. Here are some of their questions: What are types of pollution? How pollution affect living things and planet? How living things create pollution? If pollution can damage the Earth, why people still pollute? How to solve pollution?
Using a KWHLEAQ Chart, students displayed evidences of what they know about pollution. They were encouraged to think about what they want to focus their research. Students were asked leading questions for each column of the chart, such as, “What do you already ‘know’ about pollution?” “What things do you ‘want’ to learn about pollution, so you can focus your research?” and “What did you ‘learn’ from doing your research?”
Match up words with pictures Students showed enthusiasm in learning new vocabularies by matching words with pictures using the word wall. They used this activity to improve their reading, spelling and vocabulary skills by using problem solving and reasoning skills to match up terms with definitions, and in some cases symbolic representation.
Students visually illustrated the relationships between concepts and ideas. Concepts are linked by words and phrases that explain the connection between the ideas, helping students organize and structure their thoughts to further understand information and discover new relationships. They presented a broad concept “Pollution” with connected sub-topics and specific concepts. Grade 4
